2011 Corgi Classic

My parents came up this weekend and we had a good time.  The weekend was filled with some drama, awesome corgi and dachshund races, good food and good visiting.  The weekend started with drama.  We, along with our entire town, have been fighting the Great Hornet War of 2011.  We had another battle this weekend.  This time it was hornets vs. Daisy!  We went out the door to greet my parents.  Daisy was on her leash and then BAM - she started limping and not putting any weight on her back left leg!  We picked her up and saw something fly off of the pad of her foot.  She got stung!  We hurried inside (using the other door) and quickly started pet first aid.  We made sure there was no stinger in her foot and quickly called the on-call vet.  She said that Miss Pup would probably be swollen and may not walk on that foot for a couple of days.  She recommended some allergy pills and keep an eye on her.


Miss Pup took a nice, long nap and was favoring that leg a bit, but able to put weight on it and interested in squeakers.  So, we decided for a nice distraction for all of us we would attend the Corgi Classic as planned.

The 2011 Dachshund Derby and Corgi Classic, hosted by our local rescue organization.  We had a wonderful time at the event.  It was a great distraction for both the pup and ourselves.  The day started with a costume contest (which we did not enter).  Here are some of our favorites...

Rescue Parade

 Next up on the schedule was the "Rescued Parade".  We walked in the parade since the pup was a rescue pup.  It was great because the vast majority of participants were rescues.  We learned that our local rescue has placed 107 pups this calendar year so far!  Last year they placed around 80...so they are doing great.



Then came the races!  The dogs were divided by breed and age.  Some of the races were so fast with the dogs running their hearts out.  Others were slow-pokes who wanted belly-rubs or to play or sleep.  It was hilarious.

We participated in the Oscar Meyer Corgi (age 1-5) against 2 other pups.  One of the pups is the pup of our groomer and we were sure she was going to win.  We lined up with me and Miss Pup at the starting line and her dad with a squeaker at the finish line.  She escaped on me and did a "practice run" right off the bat.  She was enjoying herself so much and did not have a thought in her mind about the bee sting.  We got Miss Pup back to the starting line and then...they were off.  In about 30 seconds, all three pups were at the finish line then back to the middle to play.  We came in first in that race.

Then was our age group's Calcutta.  This is where dogs are "bid on" in an auction style.  Miss Pup didn't get the highest bid, but that's okay because we were there to have fun and help raise money for the rescue.  After the bidding, we went back to the starting line and....Miss Pup escaped for an early run again!  She really wanted her squeaker.  So, back to the starting gate and ....they were off.  Again, they all ran so fast.  The groomer's pup, who we personally favored to win came in 2nd to Miss Daisy.  That's right - she won her age/breed division!  She earned herself a whole lot of rawhides and a squeaker for a prize.  (The squeaker is the best part of the prize!)

The day of races ended with a "grudge match" between an almost corgi and 2 corgis.  You can see a short video of that match here.  There was a dinner on the line for the winner and the almost corgi won!  We all had a blast.

We are so proud of our pup.  Not only did she do great at the races, but she socialized well with dogs and people, ran around, smelled everything and pretty much forgot about her stung foot.  We are very thankful that she is okay.  Today she is not favoring it at all.  We think there is still a little swelling, but nothing substantial.  We are very lucky to have Miss Pup as part of our family.
