Gone Girl, by Gillian Flynn

This past week I finished Gone Girl, by Gillian Flynn.  This book tells the story of a missing woman and her husband.  Nick gets a call from a neighbor that his front door is standing wide open.  He rushes home to find the living room in shambles and his wife Amy missing.

The entire book is written in alternating points of view - Amy's and Nick's points of view.  Amy has grown up as a spoiled only child of parents who expect her to be Amazing Amy (the title character of their book series - modeled after their daughter).  Both Amy and her husband Nick have made many sacrifices in the course of their marriage.  After they both lose their New York writing jobs they move to Missouri to care for Nick's ailing mother and Alzheimer's father.

The first portion of the book shows us Amy's diary entries from when they first met up until the day of the disappearance.  Nick's portion begins with the day of the disappearance.

There are then some plot twists (my favorites in a book) and we learn that Amy has staged her disappearance!  We then meet the real Amy and learn that her life with Nick was not what she wrote in her diary.  The book made me go back and forth as to who was to blame for events, who was the "bad guy" and what really happened.

This is another must read for lovers of thrillers and mysteries.  Word of caution:  the book is sometimes pretty graphic and definitely has some "bad" language.  All in all, it was a good one and definitely on my "read again" list.
